Timeline

1858

Paternal granddaughter of Reginald (1858-1948) and Adelaide (née Bloxam) Hallward (1860-1925). Both were born and raised on the Isle of Wight, England and died in Shorne, Kent, England.

1911

Grahame's parents first emigrated from the UK to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in 1911, then moved to Los Angeles, California in 1915. Jean (or Jeanne) McDougall (1890-1894), a Lochranza, Scotland-born stage actress and acting coach, known professionally as Jean Grahame (Gloria's grandmother's maiden name) and London-born decorator, architect and author Reginald Michael Bloxam Hallward (aka Michael Hallward; 1889-1982) both survived their younger daughter. Their first child, actress Joy Hallward (1911-2003), was Gloria's older sister.

1925

Gloria was not born in 1925 as usually stated, but in 1923.

1944

Gloria Grahame Hallward, an acting pupil of her mother (stage actress and teacher Jean Grahame), acted professionally while still in high school. In 1944 Louis B. Mayer saw her on Broadway and gave her an MGM contract under the name Gloria Grahame.

Her debut in the title role of Blonde Fever (1944) was auspicious, but her first public recognition came on loan-out in It's A Wonderful Life (1946).

1946

Appeared in three Oscar Best Picture nominees; It's A Wonderful Life (1946), Crossfire (1947) and Greatest Show On Earth (1952), with the last winning in 1952.

1947

Although her talent and sex appeal were of star quality, she did not fit the star pattern at MGM, who sold her contract to RKO in 1947.

1948

Gloria's children: Timothy Ray (born 12 November 1948) by Nicholas Ray; Marianna Paulette Howard (born 1 October 1956), by Cy Howard, and Anthony Ray Jr. (born 30 April 1963) and James Ray (born 21 September 1965) by Anthony Ray.

1949

A very close friend of Jeff Donnell. They met on the set of Roughshod (1949), and appeared together the next year in In a Lonely Place (1950).

1950

Here the same problem resurfaced; her best film in these years was made on loan-out, In a Lonely Place (1950). Soon after, she left RKO.

The 1950s, her best period, brought her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar and typecast her as shady, inimitably sultry ladies in seven well-known film-noir classics.

1952

In Italy, a great deal of her films were dubbed by Rina Morelli, but occasionally she was also dubbed by Renata Marini, most notably in The Bad and the Beautiful (1952); Lydia Simoneschi; Andreina Pagnani, in Fritz Lang's Human Desire (1954) and Wanda Tettoni in Crossfire (1947).

1953

Was the 37th actress to receive an Academy Award; she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) at The 25th Annual Academy Awards (1953) on March 19, 1953.

1955

Rumors of being difficult to work with on the set of Oklahoma! (1955) helped sideline her film career from 1956 onward. She also suffered from marital and child-custody troubles.

1960

Eight years after divorce from Nicholas Ray, who was 12 years her senior (and reportedly had discovered her in bed with his 13 year old son), and after a subsequent marriage to Cy Howard ended in divorce, in 1960 she married her former stepson Anthony Ray (who was almost 14 years younger than she was. ) This led former husbands Nicholas Ray and Cy Howard to sue Grahame; each man seeking custody of his respective child, putting gossip columnists and scandal sheets into overdrive. Grahame herself underwent electroconvulsive therapy after the ensuing stress caused a nervous breakdown. Surprisingly, however, Grahame and Anthony "Tony" Ray proved a happy couple. The union would be Grahame's longest marriage, lasting almost 14 years (10 years longer than her previous union with Ray's father); the couple had two children, Anthony Jr. and James.

In 1960, Grahame resumed stage acting, combined with TV work and, from 1970, some mostly inferior films. She was described as a serious, skillful actress; spontaneous, honest, and strong-willed; imaginative and curious; incredibly sexy but insecure about her looks (prompting plastic surgery on her famous lips); loving appreciative male company; "a bit loony".

1975

In 1975, she was treated for breast cancer. Five years later, she was diagnosed with cancer again, although it is unclear if this was a new cancer or a metastasis of her breast cancer.

1978

Grahame eventually moved to England in 1978.

1981

Her busiest period of British and American stage work ended abruptly in 1981 when she collapsed from cancer symptoms during a rehearsal. She wished to remain in Liverpool with her partner, Peter Turner (almost 30 years her junior), but after Turner notified her children of her health condition and impending death, two of her children flew to England to retrieve her, insisting she return to the United States. She died a few hours later that same day of stomach cancer and peritonitis at St.

1982

Grahame spent her last days in the Liverpool, England home of her friend Peter Turner. She was flown back to New York by her children just hours before her death at St. Vincent's Hospital, Manhattan, aged 57, from stomach cancer and peritonitis. She predeceased her nonagenarian parents; her father died in 1982 and her mother died in 1984. A 1987 biography of Grahame was entitled "Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool".

1990

A painting of Grahame was hanging in the Ellington Room of the Manhattan Plaza, where Grahame maintained an apartment during her last five years according to a January 1990 article about the actress that appeared in "Films in Review.".

2004

Profiled in "Killer Tomatoes: Fifteen Tough Film Dames" by Ray Hagen and Laura Wagner (McFarland, 2004).

2017

Is portrayed by Annette Bening in Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool (2017).
