Timeline

1917

In 1917 he was partnered with Dolly Harmer in the play 'Some Detective' which wasn't very successful but from it sprang a partnership on stage and in life that lasted nearly 40 years with Dolly, who died in 1956, often playing his stage mother. He was awarded the O. B.

1924

He hated being called 'Wee' but he said that when you're small you have to live with with the problem as there's nothing you can do about it. He started on the stage on his native Sunderland when he was 5 and was a star for well over half a century as variety's 'eternal boy'. He was already earning £100 a week when he was 10 touring the country in pantomime. He worked with many music hall legends including Stan Laurel and made his first trip to Hollywood in 1924. For many years his mother traveled with him and he joked that when he was earning £400 a week she allowed him only 10 shillings a week pocket money.

1946

Pint-sized, squeaky-voiced British music hall comedian, a performer from the age of five. Was awarded an OBE in 1946.

In 1953 he retired from performing but carried on writing regular columns for the showbiz press and working on behalf of the British Music Hall Society.
