Viktor Suvorov is a military historian and a former Soviet intelligence officer of GRU who defected to the United Kingdom at the height of the Cold War. He has written extensively about the causes of the WWII, publishing ten books on the subject, of which the most well known in the West is "Icebreaker". His other books "The Liberators", "Aquarium", "Inside the Soviet Army", "Spetsnaz" and others are on the subjects of the Soviet army, intelligence and Spetznaz based mostly on his personal experience. Viktor Suvorov was born in 1947 in Russia into a family of an artillery military officer and WWII veteran.

1958

Pursuing a military career he studied at Suvorov Military Schools in Voronezh and Kalinin from 1958 to 1965.

1965

He then graduated from Kiev Higher Military Command School where he studied between 1965 and 1968.

1968

Upon his graduation he served as a young officer in 145th Motorised Rifles Guard Regiment (reconnaissance training unit) with which he took part in the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia. Upon completing the mission he was promoted to a tank company commander.

1970

In 1970 - 1971 he served in Volga Military District Reconnaissance Headquarters and in the 808th Special Army Reconnaissance "Spetsnaz" company.

1971

Upon his graduation from the Military Diplomatic Academy (1971-1974) he served as a Soviet diplomat in Geneva, Switzerland (1974-1978) working undercover as a Soviet military intelligence officer of GRU.
