After working as a prosecutor in the office of the California Attorney General, Tony Blankley worked in the Reagan administration as a speechwriter and senior political analyst before he became a spokesman for and an adviser to Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (1990-1997).

In June of 2002, he became editorial page editor for the Washington Times. Left in 2007.
