Pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals (1957 and 1959), Pittsburgh Pirates (1960-1961) and Washington Senators (1961-1964 and 1966).

On 12 September 1962, he set the record for strikeouts in a major league baseball game. Pitching for the Washington Senators, he struck out 21 Baltimore Orioles in a 16-inning complete game. The Senators won, 2-1. As of the end of the 2015 season, the record still stands.
