Sonny James was born on May 1, 1928 in Hackleburg, Alabama, USA as James Hugh Loden. He was married to Doris Shrode.

1950

He started out performing with his family on a weekly radio show on WMSD-AM in Muscle Shoals. That led to paying gigs for the family across the South, as well as radio shows in Birmingham and Memphis. He was sent to Korea as part of the Alabama Army National Guard in 1950.

1953

Had a long string of top-10 hit singles on Billboard magazine's country singles chart between 1953 and 1977. Included in that string were 21 #1 singles -- 16 of those coming in an uninterrupted string between that began with his 1967 hit, "I'll Never Find Another You" and ended with 1971's "Here Comes Honey Again." His record still stands.

1957

His biggest hits include "Young Love" (1957, his first #1); "Take Good Care of Her" (1966); "It's the Little Things" (1967); "Running Bear" (1969); "It's Just a Matter of Time," "Don't Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Endlessly" (1970); "Empty Arms" (1971); "That's Why I Love You Like I Do" (1972); "Is it Wrong (For Loving You)" (1974) and "Little Band of Gold" (1975).
