Timeline
Siw Malmkvist was born on December 31, 1936 in Landskrona, Skåne län, Sweden.
Siw Malmkvist is one of Sweden's top artists, with a career that began in 1955 and continues to this day. Starting out as a singer, she developed into a stage performer and actress and is something of a living legend (2016) in Sweden.
Malmkvist was the second of three female Scandinavian schlager artists to represent Germany in the Contest in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the first being Norwegian Wenche Myhre in 1968 with "Ein Hoch der Liebe" and the third Danish Gitte Hænning with "Junger Tag in 1973.
In the early 60's love came into Siw's life. It was the Finnish composer and pianist Lasse Mårtensson. They got married in 1963 but their marriage only lasted a couple of years and since 1971, she has lived together with the Swedish actor Fredrik Ohlsson.
Her biggest hit "Liebeskummer lohnt sich nicht" (It isn`t worth to be lovesick) ranked #1 in Germany`s single charts (1964).
By 1967 she had begun to run out of steam and stopped singing full-time. She even took a day job as an office secretary, but was lured back into the music business in 1968 by Harlekin, with which she won the Deutsche Schlager-Wettbewerb (wearing the most hideous, gaudy outfit ever seen on color television at that time) for a second time.
In 1969 Malmkvist returned to Eurovision, performing the West German entry "Primaballerina" at Madrid, incidentally finishing shared 9th with the Swedish entry "Judy, min vän", sung by Tommy Körberg.
In 1980 she appeared in the musical version of Some Like It Hot (as Sugar) and she played the part of Luisa in the original Swedish - and European - production of Maury Yeston's musical Nine in 1983.
Together with actor Thorsten Flinck, she recorded a popular Swedish cover of Nick Cave/Kylie Minogue's 1995 hit "Where the Wild Roses Grow".
She is an actress, known for Pelle Svanslös och den stora skattjakten (2000), Forelsket i København (1960) and Verrückt und zugenäht (1962).
In 2002 she appeared as the Mother in Hasse Alfredson's stage play Lille Ronny at Maximteatern.
Has been on tour (Gitte Wencke Siw) with Danish Gitte Hænning and Norwegian Wenche Myhre since 2004.
In 2008/2009, she played the part of Fräulein Schneider in the musical Cabaret at Stockholms Stadsteater, directed by Colin Nutley.
