He started off as a stage actor in 1942 and occasionally appeared in movies between 1948-1951. He joined Shanghai Film Studio in 1952 and became a professional movie actor.

He got a nickname "director of intelligence" (in Chinese, "Qing bao chu zhang") because of his outstanding performance in Du Jiang zhen cha ji (1954) and the remake Du Jiang zhen cha ji (1974).
