Croydon-born entertainer and authority on the history of music hall entertainment, on stage from 1957 and later a prolific actor on TV and radio. His first jobs were as a messenger for an advertising agency, a window dresser and a commercial artist.

1972

He was an actor and writer, known for The Chastity Belt (1972), Cold Lazarus (1996) and Ashes to Ashes (2008). He was married to Debbie Flitcroft and Ann Lambert.

1983

He was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1983 (1982 season) for Best Actor in a Musical for "Underneath the Arches".

2004

He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the British Empire) in the 2004 Queen's New Year Honours List for his services to Entertainment.

2005
