Richard Wilbur was born on March 1, 1921 in New York City, New York, USA as Richard Purdy Wilbur. He was married to Mary Charlotte Hayes Ward.

1942

He earned a bachelor's degree at Amherst College in 1942, then enlisted in the Army. He served as a cryptographer in Africa, southern France, and Italy during WWII. After the war, he earned a master's degree from Harvard University, and worked for many years as an English professor.

1957

Was nominated for Broadway's 1957 Tony Award for his lyrics, as part of a Best Musical nomination for "Candide."

1965

His 1965 translation of Molière's "Tartuffe" has become the standard translation of the work, revived on Broadway at least twice, and included in at least one school anthology. Some critics consider it the equal of Molière's famous play, and one even pronounced it superior to the original play.

1987

American poet, appointed U.S. poet laureate in 1987.

1994

He was awarded the American National Medal of the Arts in 1994 by the National Endowment of the Arts in Washington D.C.
