Bates was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm off break.

He was born in Stamford, Lincolnshire.

1990

Bates was a junior at Bourne CC and a made his debut in county cricket for Lincolnshire in the Minor Counties Championship against Bedfordshire in 1990.

Bates played 2 further Championship matches for the county, against Hertfordshire in 1990 and Cumberland in 2006.

He played 3 matches for the county in the MCCA Knockout Trophy: Twice against Suffolk and once against Devon.

Bates made his debut in List A cricket for Lincolnshire in the 1990 NatWest Trophy against Gloucestershire.

1993

In 1993, he made his debut in first-class cricket for Nottinghamshire against Oxford University.

From 1993 to 1999, he represented the county in 33 first-class matches, the last of which came against Northamptonshire.
