Evans was born in 1950 in Englewood, New Jersey, to Dudley and Caroline Evans.

He had a brother, John Randall, and a sister, Elizabeth Temple.

He attended Phillips Academy, Andover.

For three years, Evans attended the Central School of Speech and Drama.
