At age 17, he received a scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied cello with Daniel Saidenberg and Gregor Piatigorsky, and chamber music with William Primrose. When he graduated in 1947, he was accepted into the Philadelphia Orchestra's cello section, becoming the orchestra's youngest-ever principal cellist.
