Friedmann was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.

She attended Isidore Newman School and is a 1968 graduate of Smith College.

She holds a master's degree from Temple University and conducted doctoral work at the University of Denver.

1979

Friedman was previously married to Robert Skinner from 1979 to 1995, and married Edward Muchmore in 1999.

1988

She also is the author of the comedic book, Too Smart to Be Rich, published in 1988 by the New Chapter Press, syndicated by The New York Times (not in print).

Friedman's first novel The Exact Image of Mother was published in 1991 by Viking and is no longer in print.
