In 2000, he scored a clean sweep by winning both Tony Awards as Best Director (Play) for Michael Frayn's "Copenhagen" and Best Director (Musical) for a revival of "Kiss Me, Kate." He has also been Tony-nominated five other times: as Best Director (Dramatic), in 1968 for "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg;" as Best Director (Play), in 1984 for "Noises Off;" and in 1990 for "Lettice and Lovage;" and as Best Director (Musical), in 1990 for "City of Angels;" and in 1997 for "The Life." He is the only directed to have been twice nominated in both directing caregories in the same year (1990 and 2000).

2002

He was nominated for a 2002 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Director (2001 season) for the musical, "Kiss Me, Kate", performed at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London, England.

2003
