"The Subsets of Limited Transposition" (which takes Olivier Messiaen's Modes of limited transposition and updates it) and "Appendix: Scales for Jazz Improvisation" in The Complete Thesaurus of Musical Scales are very helpful to organize musician's mind and ear.
