Martin Gabel was born on June 19, 1912 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Son of a jeweller. Graduated from Lehigh University, majoring in English. Trained for acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. First on stage in Chicago. Subsequent success on Broadway in 'Dead End' (1935-37). Later became one of the original members of Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre Company. Had a reputation as a versatile all-round character actor.
