Her mother was Puerto Rican and her father was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States at the age of 20.
She grew up in the Mission District of San Francisco and in Westlake, Daly City.
Guilfoyle's mother, Mercedes, taught special education.
She died of leukemia when Guilfoyle was 11.
