At age 34 Kate's first real journalistic career break came in May 1980 when she was assigned by the BBC to report on the Iranian Embassy Hostage crisis in London. This she did unscripted from behind a car door just as Britain's elite SAS (Special Air Services) commenced their surgical "Operation Nimrod" assault on the embassy building, an exercise that was televised for all the world to see.

1993

She was awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 1993 for her services to journalism.
