Bowen was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the second of three daughters of Suzanne (née Frey) and John Alexander Luetkemeyer Jr., a commercial real estate developer.

She is the sister of infectious disease specialist Annie Luetkemeyer and designer Molly Luetkemeyer.
