Timeline

1923

John Herbert Foulds played cello with The Hallé Orchestra in Manchester. He became famous in his day as a composer of light music, such as the 'Keltic Lament' from his Keltic Suite, and for his World Requiem, performed between 1923-6 at the Royal Albert Hall (London) for Armistice Night commemorations. A fascination with Eastern mysticism led to his second wife, violinist Maud McCarthy and Foulds moving to India, where he died from cholera while Director of European Music at All-India Radio, Delhi.
