He is a producer and editor, known for The London Weekend Show (1973), Weekend World (1972) and Nice Time (1968).

1975

While he was Director-General of the BBC, Birt was famously described by renowned playwright Dennis Potter as a "croak-voiced Dalek". This comparison led to him being portrayed as Davros, the megalomaniac mad scientist and creator of the Daleks in a Christmas tape made by BBC staff. Reference was again made to this by actor Tom Baker and former BBC director and producer David Maloney on the DVD commentary for Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks: Part Five (1975).

1991

He was Director-General of the BBC (British Broadcasting Company) from 1991 to 1999; Deputy Director-General from 1987 to 1990; and Programme Controller of LWT (London Weekend Television) from 1981 to 1986.
