Timeline

1930

Joan Diener was born on February 24, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

1949

She was an actress, known for Suspense (1949), Omnibus (1952) and The Ed Sullivan Show (1948). She was married to Albert Marre.

1952

Operetta singer and Broadway actress/singer. She never appeared in a film. She rarely appeared in a role on television, and made one of her few appearances there in an adaptation of "Androcles and the Lion", an episode of the 1952 anthology series "Omnibus".

1953

Best known for her extraordinary beauty, her equally extraordinary singing voice (she could go from the deep alto to the high soprano range in the same role) and for creating the female lead roles in two classic Broadway plays directed by her husband, Albert Marre: Lalume in "Kismet" (1953) and Aldonza/Dulcinea in "Man of La Mancha" (1966). Alas for film audiences, when the films of both plays were made, the roles went not to Diener, but to Dolores Gray and Sophia Loren, respectively.

1965

Her husband directed her 1965 triumphant return to Broadway in "Man of La Mancha." She reprised the Aldonza/Dulcinea role in revivals over the next 25 years and returned to Broadway in 1992 to replace Sheena Easton in the part.
