He was a director and editor, known for People of the Cumberland (1937), A Bronx Morning (1931) and Eisenstein's Mexican Project (1958). He was married to Si-Lan Chen.

He enlisted in Los Angeles as a private in the U.S. Army on 11 November 1943, during World War II.

He taught at Yale University and at York University in Toronto during the 1960s and early 1970s. He came to New York University in 1973, and held the Pinewood Chair of Cinema Studies until his death.
