Jan Smuts was born on May 24, 1870 in Malmesbury, Cape Colony as Jan Christiaan Smuts.

1919

Prime minister of South Africa (1919-1924, 1939-1948).

1940

Was a member of the Imperial War Cabinet during both World Wars. Smuts' importance to the war effort during World War II was such that the Sir John Colville, Prime Minister Winston Churchill's private secretary, proposed in 1940 that should Churchill die or become incapacitated before the war's conclusion, that Smuts be appointed as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Both King George VI and Mary the Queen Mother approved of the plan. Since Churchill lived for another twenty five years, the constitutionality of this unprecedented plan was never tested. It was this closeness to the British establishment, the King and Churchill that angered many Afrikaners in South Africa, who were still resentful over having been defeated by the British in the Second Boer War. This was a major factor in his defeat for re-election in 1948.
