He played representative level rugby union (RU) for England (1975 England rugby union tour of Australia and 1978/1979 Five Nations Championship squad(s)), and England (Under-23s), and at club level for Bridlington RUFC and Roundhay RFC, as a scrum-half, and club level rugby league (RL) for Castleford (Heritage № 609), as a, or , i.e. number 1, 2 or 5, 6, or 7.

1983

Ian Orum played as an interchange/substitute, i.e. number 14, (replacing Gary Hyde) in Castleford's 2-13 defeat by Hull F.C. in the 1983 Yorkshire County Cup Final during the 1983–84 season at Elland Road, Leeds, on Saturday 15 October 1983.
