Ian Borg (born 28 February 1986) is a Maltese politician, Member of Parliament since 2013.

He serves as Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade.

Borg was born to a family from Dingli.

2005

Ian Borg started his political career in 2005 being elected mayor of his hometown Dingli for the Labour Party.

2008

He was re-elected in 2008 and 2012.

2012

Borg graduated as a Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta in 2012.

2013

In 2013, Borg run for Parliament for the Partit Laburista and was elected for the 7th District with 4,186 votes.

2017

He was appointed by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat as Parliamentary Secretary for the EU Presidency 2017 and EU Funds, the youngest member of the Cabinet.

In the second Muscat government in 2017, Ian Borg was appointed as Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects.

During his mandate, he oversaw infrastructural projects such as the Kappara junction, the Marsa junction project and the Central Link project, and the set up of the Infrastructure Malta agency.

These infrastructural projects received scathing critiques from civil society and environmentalists for perpetuating a car-centric vision of mobility and for leading to the loss of agricultural land and the cutting of over 500 trees only for the Central Link project in Attard.

In October 2023, the Times of Malta revealed that Borg himself and his canvassers put pressure on Transport Malta’s director of licensing to ensure that candidates obtained driving licenses despite lacking preparation.

In March 2022 Ian Borg was appointed Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade in the government of Robert Abela.

He was in charge of Malta's diplomatic service during its mandate at the United Nations Security Council.

In March 2023, the Court of Malta declared illegal the permit through which Borg built a swimming pool in his property of Santa Katerina, Dingli.
