At the University of Sheffield, he received a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1961 and a doctorate in molecular spectroscopy in 1964.

1996

He shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in chemistry (with Robert Curl and Richard Smalley) for his role in the discovery of the carbon molecule buckminsterfullerene, or fullerene. (The popular term is buckyball.) The study of buckyballs led to the discovery of cylindrical carbon structures called carbon nanotubes, which in turn led to the field of nanotechnology.
