Timeline

1935

Hamburg-born art director in Hollywood. Began at 20th Century Fox (1935-40). Briefly at RKO (1943), then settled at MGM from 1944 until his retirement twenty years later. Nominated for five Academy Awards. Did possibly his best work on The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945) and Lust for Life (1956).

1959

Following the early death of William A. Horning in 1959, he was interim head of M-G-M's art department for about a year, and was, following the usual Hollywood custom of the time, given a shared credit on all films and TV episodes produced during that period at the studio. However, the appointment was not a permanent one; George W. Davis then took over and held the post for over a decade.
