Timeline

1986

Bertha Gisella Gaytán Gutiérrez (April 6, 1986 – April 1, 2024), was a Mexican politician who was a candidate for mayor of her hometown, in the state of Guanajuato for the Morena party, before her murder, which occurred on April 1, 2024.

Gaytán, was born in the city of Celaya, Guanajuato on April 6, 1986.

Gisela Gaytán stood out from an early age for her spirit of service, rooted in a traditional family in the Benito Juárez neighborhood.

She graduated in law from the Lasallista Benavente University and with a master's degree in Administrative Justice, her dedication was reflected both in her personal office and in her work in the Municipal Comptroller's Office.

Due to her outstanding professional career, she was encouraged to enter politics eight years ago, initially in the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and later in Morena.

In addition, she held relevant positions as vice president of the Board of Directors of the National Youth Council of the Mexican Youth Institute (Imjuve), and her last role was as state advisor of the party in Celaya.

She was recognized for her integrity in every role she played, from her work managing social struggles to her role as coordinator in the Welfare Secretariat.

She was shot to death on April 1 at her first campaign rally for mayor of Celaya.

The attack against the candidate occurred in broad daylight, shortly before 6:00 p.m., when Gisela Gaytán was surrounded by supporters in the streets of San Miguel Octopan.

Images of the moment in which militants shout “Morena, Morena” were broadcast on social networks, but were interrupted by several gunshots.

The first to speak out on the matter was the Morenista Alcaraz Hernández, who announced that she would not give any more statements out of respect for the "irreparable loss" of her partner.

"“I am shocked, angry, sad and in mourning. I announce that today we are going to suspend our campaign and in the next few hours we will give an official position. My condolences and quick resignation to his family and friends. Rest in peace,”" she wrote via X, formerly Twitter.

Subsequently, PAN member Libya Dennise condemned “the cunning” crime, so she did not hesitate to send her condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Gaytán, 37 years old.

After the murder of the candidate, the Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) regretted the murder and sent his condolences to family and friends.
