British playwright, novelist and screenwriter, usually on naval themes. Saw active service as a midshipman during World War I aboard the battleship 'Emperor of India'. Commanded four submarines before his retirement in 1936. Subsequently recalled to serve in the technical branch of the Admiralty. His early work was based on his wartime experiences, though he later also authored books for children.
