Her mother immigrated in 1886 at the age of 12 and married George four years later. Gertrude had two famous siblings, George T. Delacorte Jr. , philanthropist and founder of Dell Publishing and Eugene Tonkonogy, a very successful real estate investor and attorney.

Gertrude Tonkongy was a playwright and author. She was born around 1908, most likely in New York City. She was one of ten children born to George and Sylvia (some early records have her name as Sadie or Sasha) Tonkonogy, both Russian immigrants.
