U.S. and Canadian Hall of Fame jockey who rode Seabiscuit to victory over Triple Crown champion War Admiral in a legendary 1938 match race.

1950

Died at age thirty-five as a result of a racing accident. In his honor, Santa Anita Park erected a life-size bronze bust in the track's paddock area. Since 1950 the United States Jockeys' Guild annually awards the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award to the North American jockey who demonstrates high standards of personal and professional conduct both on and off the racetrack.
