He turned down an offer to become producer of Doctor Who (1963) as the replacement for Graham Williams in 1980. John Nathan-Turner became producer instead. Ironically, according to Andrew Cartmel, Nathan-Turner turned down the chance to become producer of Bergerac (1981) several years later, which instead went to Gallacio.
