Studied jazz composition with William Russo and graduated 'cum laude' from Amherst College in 1956.

1958

Between 1958 and 1968 he worked as composer/arranger for Radio City Music Hall, frequently with name orchestras like those of Benny Goodman and Harry James. He became music director for the Meg Welles Quintet in 1962, recording three albums for Columbia. From 1967-1997, Karlin wrote scores for motion pictures and television, winning both an Academy Award and an Emmy.
