Francis de Guingand was born on February 28, 1900 as Francis Wilfred De Guingand. He was married to Arlie Stuart.

1919

He studied at Ampleforth College and at Sandhurst Military. He joined the Middlesex Regiment in 1919 and was second to King's African Rifles from 1926 to 1931. He was Officer of Commanding Troops in Nyasaland from 1930 to 1931.

1940

During World War II, he was a Major and was Military Assistant to the Secretary of State for War. In January 1940, he was an instructor at the new staff college in Haifa in then Palestine where he was Lieutenant Colonel in his ranking. He was Commandant of the School of Combined Operations in December 1940 where he became Secretary to the Commanders-in-Chief Committee. In February 1942, he became the Director of Military Intelligence in the Middle East in Cairo, Egypt. After the First Battle of El Alamein, he was appointed the 8th Army's Brigaider General Staff (Operations). He became Magor General in May 1943.

1942

He was a British Army Officer who served with Montgomery in August 1942 from El Alamein in North Africa to the surrender of the Wehrmacht in the West.

1944

He was awarded the Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in the 1944 King's Honours List for his services to the military during World War II.

1945

He was awarded the American Legion of Merit (Commander) by the United States in April 1945.
