Both he and his nephew Laurence Fox appeared in films which depicted Operation Market Garden in September 1944: Edward played General Brian Horrocks in A Bridge Too Far (1977) while Laurence played Sturmbannführer Klaus Kessler in The Last Drop (2006).

He was married to Tracy Reed from 1958 to 1961. In Edward & Mrs. Simpson (1978), he played the future Edward VIII, who was the lover of Reed's maternal grandmother Freda Dudley Ward.
