English writer, broadcaster and newspaper columnist of Latvian-Jewish ancestry. Educated at St. John's College Oxford, he began his working life as a barrister. He was employed as a BBC staff producer during World War II and later became known as the host of the three-reel crime series Scotland Yard and Scales of Justice, filmed at Merton Park Studios in the 1950's and 60's.
