Claus Emmelmann (born 29 November 1959 in Hannover, Germany) is a German engineer and scientist for laser technology and 3D printing.

1985

After graduating from high school and training as an officer in the german military, Claus Emmelmann has been researching and developing innovative production technologies using laser technology since completing his mechanical engineering studies at Leibniz University Hannover in 1985.

He has published his activities in various teams in over 600 national and international publications on topics like laser cutting, laser joining and 3D printing of various materials and products.

1986

As head of department from 1986 to 1991, he dedicated himself to the establishment of a technology transfer institution, the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. After obtaining his doctorate in engineering (Dr.-Ing. in 1991), he worked as a business unit manager and international sales manager, among other things for the expansion of the solid-state laser division of the then world-leading laser manufacturer Rofin-Sinar within the Siemens Group.

2001

As head of the Institute for Laser and Systems Engineering (iLAS), he has been researching and teaching at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) since 2001.

In 2001, he was appointed professor at the TUHH and founded the iLAS in the Dean's Office of Industrial and Technical Sciences, which he led as Dean for three terms.

2006

Together with the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (FHH), Claus Emmelmann founded the Laser Zentrum Nord GmbH (LZN) in 2006 as Chief Executive Officer.

2014

For this, he received the German Industry Innovation Award in 2014, was nominated for the German Future Prize by the German Federal President in 2015 and was honored as Hamburgs Person of the Year in 2016.

Claus Emmelmann is married, has two children and has been a member of the Rotary Club Hamburg-Haake for over 25 years.

2018

In 2018, he transferred the LZN with its research team of more than 100 employees and a revenue of around 10 million euros to the first independent Fraunhofer Institute of the FHH, the Institute for Additive Production Technologies (IAPT).

2020

Until 2020 he was the Institute Director of the IAPT.

During his almost 40-year long career, he has awarded more than 30 scientists a doctorate in engineering, initiated the founding of six start-ups, acquired 100 million euros in research and infrastructure funding for the FHH and volunteered on various scientific and industrial committees (TUHH research focus on medicine, aviation and maritime technologies, HansePhotonik e. V., WLT e. V., Technologien in der Bildung e. V., Mobility goes Additive e. V., 3D-Druck Verband e. V., Nortec Messe Hamburg).

On the occasion of his 60th birthday colloquium by the Fraunhofer-Society, Claus Emmelmann initiated the Scientific Innovation Prize (WIP) together with the Rotary Club Hamburg-Haake in 2020.

This prize is awarded to scientists at the TUHH who have made outstanding contributions to scientific innovation research with a high degree of market maturity.

In addition to his scientific activities, Claus Emmelmann has advised numerous global companies on their 3D printing and laser-specific business strategies and M&A activities.

Claus Emmelmann received his most prestigious awards for his globally pioneering research into metallic and bionic 3D printing and its industrial transformations in the aviation, medical, automotive, tool and maritime industries.
