Douglas Craig Emhoff was born on October 13, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Jewish parents, Barbara (née Kanzer) and Michael Emhoff.

He has a brother and a sister.

1969

From 1969 to 1981, he grew up in Matawan and Old Bridge Township, New Jersey, and attended Cedar Ridge High School.

1977

His family were congregants of Temple Shalom, a Reform synagogue in Aberdeen Township at which Emhoff became a bar mitzvah in 1977.
