Dorothy Fields, daughter of vaudeville star Lew Fields (of Weber & Fields) started writing songs for Tin Pan Alley and Broadway in the 1920s, in spite of the fact, that her first Broadway show was a flop. From the 30s on she also worked for Hollywood with her partner, composer Jimmy McHugh.

1959

Won two Tony Awards in 1959 for "Redhead": as, with three collaborators, Best Authors (Musical) and as one of the book writers for the Best Musical winner. In 1966, she received two similar nominations for "Sweet Charity:" as Best Composer and Lyricist with Cy Coleman and for lyrics as part of a Best Musical nomination. Another nomination came in 1974 for "Seesaw," this time for Best Score, namely Cy Coleman's music and her lyrics.

1971

Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971.

1996

Pictured on one of a set of four 32¢ US commemorative postage stamps in the Legends of American Music series, issued 11 September 1996, celebrating American songwriters. Others honored in this issue are Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, and Hoagy Carmichael.
