Veteran Hollywood editor, from silent days. At FBO (1925-26), Pathe (1928-30), at Paramount (1935-53, latterly as supervising editor) and United Artists (for Billy Wilder, as supervising editor and associate producer, 1961-66).

At Paramount, he worked on eleven films of the director Mitchell Leisen. However, his longest and most fruitful collaboration as with Billy Wilder, spanning the period from 1939 to 1966 and encompassing such classics as Double Indemnity (1944), Sunset Boulevard (1950), Some Like It Hot (1959), and The Apartment (1960).
