Perfect Game rated Futrell the number 24 prospect in Florida, and gave him a 167th national rank.

Futrell committed to Vanderbilt University in eighth grade, despite Mark's initial unwillingness for Devin to commit before his junior year.

He committed on the same day as Enrique Bradfield and Gavin Casas, his high school (and subsequently college) teammates.

Despite Futrell's eligibility for the 2021 Major League Baseball draft, he chose to reaffirm his Vanderbilt commitment through a Twitter post.

In 2022, Futrell's freshman year, he produced a 3.41 ERA and a 9–3 win–loss record, and was named to the Freshman All-SEC team.
