Timeline
Born to Sylvia and Len, he has an older sister, Sue (born in 1960). After they had divorced, Sylvia married Jack Gahan, who adopted her children, and gave birth to another two sons, Peter (born in 1966) and Phil (born in 1968).
Dave Gahan is the lead vocalist and co-songwriter for the Alternative Rock and New Wave band Depeche Mode. He was born in North Wealed, Essex, United Kingdom on 9th May 1962.
Named his son Jack after his stepfather, who died in 1972.
After leaving Barstable School in July 1978, he found and lost about 20 jobs. Finally, he joined Southend Art College and gained the British Display Society Award.
Clarke left in 1981 to pursue other projects and was replaced by Alan Wilder, who left in 1995. Depeche Mode is now comprised of Gahan, Gore, and Fletcher.
Originally an Alternative New Wave Synth-Pop band with their own unique sound - and Gahan's unique baritone vocals - Depeche Mode discovered an instant audience with their first two albums 'Speak & Spell' (1981) and 'A Broken Frame' (1981), both making the top ten in the UK.
It was the top ten album and single 'Construction Time Again' and 'Everything Counts' (respectively) in 1983 that would convey a significant shift in the band's sound - a more mature sound - and would catapult Gahan and Depeche Mode into the international arena. The music has often been controversial, especially 'Master and Servant' (and 'Blasphemous Rumours' which is a dark yet wry look at the misery in the world and what part religion plays in this). The single was banned from many American Radio Stations.
Has three children: Jack (born on 14 October 1987) from his first wife Joanne Fox, Stella (born on 29 July 1999) from Jennifer Sklias-Gahan, and James Rogers-Gahan, Jennifer's son from a previous relationship.
In his single "Dirty Sticky Floors", he refers to his suicide attempt on 17 August 1995. At one point during that time, he spent 12 hours in his wardrobe to watch The Weather Channel and talk to a doll called "The Tin Man". He finally tried to kill himself with a razor blade.
Released his first solo album "Paper Monsters" in 2003.
Had a malignant tumor removed from his bladder [May 29, 2009].
