Co-wrote (with friends Jay Graydon and Bill Champlin) the Earth Wind & Fire hit "After the Love Has Gone", winning the GRAMMY for Best Rhythm & Blues Song (1979). The song was denied the Number One chart position by The Knack's "My Sharona" in June 1979.

1985

Scored his only instrumental hit with the "Love Theme from St. Elmo's Fire (1985)".

1988

He was awarded the C.M. (Member of the Order of Canada) on July 11, 1988 and C.O. (Officer of the Order of Canada) on October 30, 2003 and the Order of British Columbia for his services to music and charities.

1995

His personal label titled "143 Records" (from the words "I Love You") was formed as a sub-label of Warner Bros in 1995 and managed by Brian Avnet. The label's first signed act was the Irish folk-rock family quartet The Corrs.
