Made major league debut on 12 April 1955, as a pinch hitter with the Milwaukee Braves. He swung at the first pitch thrown to him and hit a home run.

He managed the Chicago White Sox from 1970 to 1975 in Chicago, Illinois; the Oakland's A's in 1976 in Oakland, California; the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1977 to 1985 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and the Atlanta Braves from 1986 to 1988 in Atlanta, Georgia.

1972

He was voted the American League Manager in 1972. Under his management, the Pittsburgh Pirates won the 1979 National League Eastern Division championship against the Cincinatti Reds. He took the Pirates to the 1979 World Series against the Baltimore Orioles to win the win the championship.
