Timeline

1966

A Star Trek: The Original Series (1966) fan, his books will make oblique references to the various films and series, and his pseudonym derives from the original captain of the Enterprise who was in the untransmitted pilot episode.

1976

Pike called Marathon Man (1976) an interesting movie in his novel The Eternal Dawn, meaning he must be a fan but instead of citing the famous drill scene as the best, it's the scene after when Dustin Hoffman is rescued by a friend, who's secretly in league with Laurence Olivier and drives him right back.

1992

In his book The Eternal Dawn the lead character Alisa is a vampire who can only forge friendships for ten years before dropping out of sight; in Death Becomes Her (1992) Meryl Streep's character must do the same with her career after drinking a potion that grants eternal youth and beauty before people grow suspicious of her unnaturally youthful looks. Pike also borrowed an idea from Predator (1987) when Arnold Schwarzenegger's character covers himself in mud to screen his body heat and hides in a tree to ambush the Predator; Alisa does the same with an unknown assailant, except with leaves.

1997

In his Last Vampire book series, vampires don't sleep in coffins, something shared by the Twilight book series and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997).

2008

In his novel The Eternal Dawn vampires cry blood; this has its antecedent in Bram Stoker's Dracula, and happens to vampires in True Blood (2008) and Interview With the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994).
