Charles Evers was born on September 11, 1922 in Decatur, Mississippi, USA as James Charles Evers. He was married to Manie Magee.

1963

In 1954, he was made State Voter Registration Chairman for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Following his brother's assassination on June 12, 1963, he took over Medgar Evers' position as field secretary of the NAACP in Mississippi.

1964

Bob Dylan dedicated his song "Only a Pawn in Their Game" to the memory of his murdered brother Medgar Evers. The song appeared on his album "The Times They Are A-Changin'" (1964).

1969

In 1969, he became the Mayor of Fayette, Mississippi and the first African-American mayor in the state in the post-Reconstruction era. He remained in the position until 1981, when he lost re-election bid. In 1985, he won the mayorship again, but lost the position again in 1989.

1980
