Spretnak was born in Pittsburgh and raised in Columbus, Ohio.

She earned degrees from St. Louis University and the University of California, Berkeley.

She is a professor emerita in philosophy and religion.

Throughout her life as a writer, speaker, and activist, she has been intrigued with dynamic interrelatedness, which plays a central role in each subject to which she has been drawn.
