Timeline
Carl Foreman was born on July 23, 1914 in Chicago, Illinois, USA as Carl Nathan Foreman.
Attended the University of Illinois, Northwestern and John J. Marshall Law School. Dropped out of the latter and subsequently worked as journalist, press agent and carnival barker, as well as writing fiction and directing for the stage. First work in Hollywood, from 1938, as story analyst and film lab technician.
A brilliant writer who was a victim of the "Red Scare" era in the 1940s and was blacklisted in the film industry for his alleged Communist sympathies. Reinstated in October 1997 along with other blacklisted victims--a bit too late for him, as he died in 1984.
As preparation for The Men (1950), Foreman and director Fred Zinnemann spent a month in a veteran's hospital researching, while star Marlon Brando lived, for a time, in its paraplegic unit.
Moved to England after being blacklisted in 1951. Member of the executive council of the British Film Production Association, fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Governor of the British Film Institute, the British National Film School and the Cinematographic Film Council. For seven years, president of the Writers Guild of Great Britain. Awarded a CBE in 1970. After his return to the U.S., appointed to the executive board of the Writers Guild of America and on the board of directors of the L.A.-based Centre Theater Group.
He is known for his work on High Noon (1952), The Guns Of Navarone (1961) and The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957). He was married to Evelyn Smith and Estelle Barr.
Wrote the original draft of the Marlon Brando motorcycle film, The Wild One (1953). The script fell afoul of the Breen Office censors--supposedly because it sought to explain the motorcyclists' sense of frustration instead of just portraying them as crazed, violent outlaws--and was re-written, to Brando's bitter disappointment.
When he heard the news that his The Victors (1963) assistant editor, Gordon Davie,'s first child (Andy Davie) had been born, Carl sent a magnum of champagne to wet the baby's head.
The film Monsieur Lecoq (1967) was unfinished and abandoned.
Won Writer of the Year Award at the Variety Club Awards in 1972 for 'Young Winston'.
Biography in: "The Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives". Volume One, 1981-1985, pages 290-292. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1998.
Carl Foreman was also an uncle to Los Angeles radio sportscaster/reporter and voice-over artist (1986 film 'Touch and Go') Ted Sobel who's mother was Sherry (Foreman) Sobel (Carl's only sister), a one-time big band singer for Freddy Martin and Frankie Ortega and his orchestra under the name Shari Fare.
Daughter Amanda Foreman is one of two children born to Foreman and his second wife Estelle in the U.K.. Amanda is the author of "Georgianna: Duchess of Devonshire", a best-selling biography of an ancestor of Princess Diana, which was adapted into the Oscar-winning The Duchess (2008). Her second book is 2011's epic non-fiction study, "A World on Fire: Britain's Crucial Role in the American Civil War".
